Gallagher Advances Bill to Expedite Levee Repairs

SACRAMENTO — Today, Assemblyman James Gallagher (R- Yuba City) was successful in advancing Assembly Bill 1273 through the Assembly Appropriations Committee. This bill, which was introduced in response to the Oroville Dam spillway crisis and the recent high water events, renews an important California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exemption for critical levee repairs.

“In the North State and throughout California, levees are the only thing protecting families and property from the devastation of flood. Renewing the CEQA exemption for levee repairs will help expedite important flood protection projects while also reducing costs. It’s a win-win,” said Assemblyman Gallagher.

A 2017 report by the non-partisan Legislative Analyst’s office found that in order to reduce flood risk across the state, tens of billions of dollars above current expenditure levels are needed over the next couple of decades.  The CEQA exemption provided by AB 1273 will help prevent delays while providing cost-savings for the repair critical levees that are part of the State Plan of Flood Control. AB 1273 now heads to the Assembly floor for further consideration.
