Press Release - Arbor Day Festival

3/12/2020

This press release was provided by the City of Oroville

ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION IN
OROVILLE’S HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

OROVILLE, CA – March 11, 2020– The Oroville Botanical Gardens, Native Sons of the Golden West and the City of Oroville are partnering up to bring Oroville an Arbor Day Celebration. The Celebration will be this Saturday, March 14, 2020, in downtown Oroville at Bicentennial Park at the corner of Robinson St and Huntoon St. The Celebration will be held from 10AM to 4PM.

The community-invited program will include a welcome from Mayor, Chuck Reynolds, information about Arbor Day, The Tree City USA Flag will be presented by a representative from Cal-Fire. There will be a tree planting demonstration and educational discussions. The celebration will include lots of actives for kids including aerial lift demonstrations, a bounce house, vendor booths and a special appearance by the TreeCircus.

The City of Oroville, for the fortieth consecutive year has been recognized and honored by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA.” The City is proud to have over 10,000 trees which provide shade in the summer and beautiful blooms in the springtime. The City Parks & Trees Department follows a maintenance and replacement plan to insure proper care of all trees.

The Tree City USA Program is sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the United States Department of Agriculture, Department of Forest Service, and the National Association of State Foresters. A community must meet four standards to be considered. The standards include a comprehensive community forestry program, a tree care ordinance, a tree board or department, and an Arbor Day observance.

Arbor Day traces its roots back to 1872 when Sterling Morton, Secretary of Agriculture under President Cleveland, began the program. As the program continued, it took on a new educational character by including teachers and students. Not only does the celebration provide a beautification aspect, but it contributes to a learning environment for historical events, celebrated persons and the study of trees. Forty-four states and territories now celebrate Arbor Day with hundreds of thousands of acres of trees planted by human hands.

Trees are widely appreciated for their bountiful produce and the beauty they contribute to our environment. They provide many conservation benefits as well, such as: tree roots grip and hold topsoil which slows runoff reducing erosion and water pollution; leafy tree canopies conserve moisture, slow the wind, keep the air clean, help quiet loud traffic noises, and provide shade from the hot sun while creating a welcome home for birds and wildlife. Poet Joyce Kilmer perhaps said it best, “I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree...”

Chamber in Review: January

1/31/2020

Picture
In the last month the Oroville Chamber has been steadily working for it's community and members. One big thing that came out this month is the Early Bird ticket sales for our Oroville Chamber Annual Dinner. The dinner will be held on April 2 and we will go over what the Chamber has been doing for Oroville over the last year.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Chamber Representatives have attended meetings for some of our annual community events including the Wildflower & Nature Festival, Arbor Day Festival, and Feather Fiesta Days. After attending the meetings we keep the information up to date on these Signature Events at VisitOroville.com
Picture
Picture
Picture
We also hosted two events of our own! We had a great time learning about Pacifica Senior Living Country Crest during our monthly Coffee Connection. At our monthly Lunch Mob, Tong Fong Low provided delicious food as everyone took the opportunity to network.
Picture
Picture
Through our contracts with the Department of Water Resources and the City of Oroville's Supplemental Benefit Fund, we were able to promote the Snow Goose Festival and Restaurant Week. We shared these events to the public through digital billboards, email, our websites, and on social media.
Picture
Lastly, our CEO/President, Eric Smith, represented the Oroville Community at the International Sportsman's Expo at Cal Expo in Sacramento. Throughout the four day event Eric spoke to hundreds of people about the recreational and entertainment opportunities Oroville has to offer.

If you have any questions on what your Oroville Chamber has been up to, please call us at (530) 538-2542, or email us at info@orovillechamber.com.

The event runs from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM and will be held at Riverbend Park in Oroville. Booth registration has already started! Last year we had over 3 thousand people in attendance and we expect this year to be even better! This is a rain or shine event.

The race will begin at 10:00 AM to kick off the festival!

Salmon Festival Follow Up

10/4/2019

Picture
The Salmon Festival is an Oroville Legacy Event resulting from the cooperation and efforts of our community’s non-profits and other agencies. There is no one agency that has sole responsibility for the event. Historically, the Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce has provided a support role for our non-profits. We, “Get the word out,” provide ticket sales, and other support for the event. The Chamber receives no compensation from our non-profits for these services. We are simply committed to the success of our town’s events.

Unfortunately, this year’s historic Friday Night Salmon Dinner didn’t happen as planned. This event is a fundraiser for our Feather River Nature Center. The Feather River Nature Center board expresses their most sincere apology for the disappointment that many experienced at the event. If you would like a reimbursement for a paper ticket, (Non-Online) the Oroville Area Chamber of Commerce has agreed to issue refunds on their behalf. The Feather River Nature Center has taken steps to ensure this never happens again and is looking forward to next year’s event.

Review: Oroville Chamber 2019 Annual Dinner

4/16/2019

Picture
On Thursday, April 11 we held our sold out 75th Oroville Chamber Annual Dinner. We wanted to take this time and thank everyone who attended and everyone who sponsored our event.
Our Annual Dinner was fantastic and full of super fun! With the theme of superheroes, Butte County's very own superhero Sheriff Kory Honea was the guest keynote speaker. We also took the time to honor some of our members who stepped up during the Camp Fire incident: The Hope Center, Jordan Crossing Ministry, River of Life Church, Ampla Health, The Salvation Army, Northwest SPCA, Ed Gilbert with Feather Falls Casino & Lodge, Oroville Rescue Mission, YMCA of Oroville, African American Family & Cultural Center, and The Father's House Church.
Feather Falls Casino & Lodge served an amazing dinner of prime rib, chicken cordon bleu, mahi mahi, and custom cakes for the event. We also held an amazing raffle with prizes donated from local companies.
If you missed this year's event you can see all the fun through our pictures on the Oroville Chamber's Facebook page. Also, keep an eye out for our Annual BBQ this September that promises to offer a family-friendly picnic atmosphere.

Watching bends in the river | River Watcher

4/15/2019

Picture
River Bend Park, of Feather River Recreation and Park District, was featured on the M-R front page in a story about a group of “Park Watch” volunteers watching out for the well-being of the park.
Park District board member Kent Fowler, directing the Park Watch, has advocated park watching, even a number of years ago when his wife Margaret was Feather River Nature Center president, and he was helping watch for invasive plants and providing protection around the Old Bathhouse park. I especially remember him defending our wildflower habitat along the riverside.
When the Hmong people first arrived in Oroville, they had some “living off the land habits” from Vietnam, and before they learned about our park laws, were attacking local wildlife to eat — especially edible plants, including pea-family plants near the nature center. Kent corrected that misunderstanding –quite adamantly!
Kent is the conscience and compassion of Oroville parks. He has organized a squad of Park Watch volunteers just to have a citizenry presence to discourage hoodlums and encourage nature watching and proper use of the parks. The facilities and habitats have taken a heavy hit in recent times, which makes it bad for wildlife and people.
“Park Watch” is quite appropriate in this age of cellphones for seeing and reporting, plus the handy phone-camera makes it a “Dick Tracy” special! (Remember years before smart phones when comic-book character Dick Tracy had a “smart phone wristwatch?”)
Kent said, “If you can spare five minutes, just go off the main road and keep your eyes open. You might see something!” I like that. He was largely referring to park mischief, but I also saw a bit of nature wisdom in those words.
“Go off the main road and keep your eyes open!” “You can observe a lot by just watching!” Yogi had it right. Kent has it right. “Watch!” Even Jesus of the Holy Bible said it: “What I say unto you, I say unto all, ‘watch!’” Mark 13:37.
The Biblical wisdom may have directly been referring to a different dimension of watching, but it is equivalent to watching for a vandal, or watching for the coming of the swallow after a cold winter. Watching for the salmon in the fall, or the coming of the migratory waterfowl from the Arctic … those are worthy things to watch for. You can watch for wildlife while watching for miscreants! “Be a good River Watcher!”
As such, my job was as a park watcher-naturalist for 32 years at Oakland Nature Center and Lake Merritt Wildlife Refuge — at a time when I was agile and could run down those thieving gosling and purse snatchers.
There are many things you can watch for while watching for specific subjects. Artists and photographers know that. Bird watchers know that. Rock hunters know that. Wildlife just happens to be part of a healthy environment, and you have two eyes so you can watch twice as much! Actually, we should be very thankful for having sight at all, as miraculous as it is. You catch on to that truth when dealing with cataracts or sight problems.
There have been numerous advocates for the out-of-doors down through the ages for those who, in the love of nature, hold communion with her visible forms, and who have developed exceptional eyesight and been privileged to use it for enhancing the wilderness they love.
The list is long for the past few hundred years when the likes of John Muir and nature people have crusaded together to contribute to the understanding and conservation of our environment. The list encompasses those Oroville park watchers who are joining the gathering of people concerned with the appearance and understanding of our wild heritage. I stand with you.

This weekend, January 18th, 19th and 20th, the Paradise Symphony Orchestra will accompany the Northern California Ballet for a special performance of The Nutcracker at the Historic Oroville State Theatre!

This performance was originally scheduled for December at the Paradise Performing Arts Center. Northern California Ballet’s Paradise studio was lost in the Camp Fire, and with it went everything they had prepared for this show. In six short weeks, they have recreated everything including sets, costumes, and props.

This production is truly a team effort and what can happen when old and new friends work together.
